Women.Design.Build Decking 101

DeckingSpringtime! A perfect time of year to think about building and refinishing your deck with a worshop from Women.Design.Build.

REGISTER HERE!

In this workshop, the pros of Eastside Lumber will give attendees a survey of decking materials; including ipe, cedar, and composite materials. Participants will cut, screw and drill into each type of material to see how they differ in ease of use, weight, density, and appearance. Eastside Lumber will also explain the support framing of decks, with options for materials from cedar to treated pine. Chemicals used for treating pine have changed to meet environmental standards, and industry trends will be addressed.

Maintenance of decking materials is also a consideration when choosing materials. Participants will take an outdoor lumber product that has weathered, like a deck chair, and strip it and clean it for re-staining and sealing using new and progressive products. Participants will also apply a penetrating stain and sealer to an already-prepped weathered decking material.

Participants will take a tour of the lumber yard and learn about different kinds of construction lumber, wood grades, uses and sources so they can be better informed about building materials for their future projects.

Each participant will receive an Eastside Lumber t-shirt or cap. This workshop is great for anyone interested in the deck building and maintenance processes.

The workshop will be led by Jennifer Chenoweth, sculptor at Fisterra Studio and business development for Eastside; and Randy Meek, the owner of Eastside Lumber and  30 year custom home builder and remodeler.
